Directed by Federico Fellini
Presented by: Istituto Italiano di Cultura Sydney
Fellini’s first film is comically inventive, brilliantly clever, and smart. Although it is a classic, the themes are pertinent today. Fellini pokes fun at celebrity culture, fandom, the church, the film industry and those who sell dreams. It is the story of a young couple of newlyweds who come to Rome for their honeymoon and for an audience with the Pope. But before the groom can even introduce the bride to his family, Wanda (Brunella Bovo) runs away to find the movie star of her fantasies The White Sheik (played by the colossal Alberto Sordi). The Music of the legendary Nino Rota establishes a whimsical style that will remain throughout Fellini’s career. It's the kind of film that fulfils all one’s expectations of a wonderful Italian comedy from the golden era of Fellini. It is listed by The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 100 films that "have changed the collective memory of the country”.

Winner / Golden Lion Venice Film Festival
My favourite Fellini Movie. - Orson Welles
Possibly [Federico Fellini's] sweetest, mildest, lightest, and most charming screwball comedy. - Amy Nicholson. Filmweek Los Angeles.
The film is a delight to watch (even more so if you know anything about Italy). It is also a cinematic masterpiece. BFI British Film Institute. Chris Wagstaff
