Michelangelo Merisi, known as Caravaggio, was the embodiment of the iconoclastic artist. His paintings are some of the most striking artworks of the Renaissance and his private life was equally as scandalous. We follow a Vatican agent, ‘Ombra’(shadow), who is charged with investigating Caravaggio. He finds a tempestuous man using prostitutes and thieves as models for the Biblical figures in his work. You can imagine the reaction from the Vatican. Riccardo Scamarcio’s passionate performance is exhilarating as the lusty ruggedly handsome artist. Legendary French actress Isabelle Huppert plays Marquessa Colonna, a lover/patron. The filmmakers were granted access to the artists’ paintings housed in museums and filmed using candlelight to pay homage to the dramatic chiaroscuro of the masterpieces. It is an intoxicating portrayal that captures the artist’s spirit while illuminating his artwork. If you don’t know anything about Caravaggio, you will want to see more. - Paolo Rotondo
