3D at The Roxy

All of us here at the The Roxy are excited about once again bringing vivid 3D images back to our big screen. In preparation for the release of AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER we have invested in a new modern projector, screen and 3D system to match the quality of the upcoming film. Digital Cinema has come a long way since we opened back in 2011 with 4K, High Frame Rate, Laser Light Source all coming out over this time. We have maintained our presentation to the highest standards over the years, but time had come install new modern equipment. Your eyes and ears will be in for a treat when you next experience a 3D film here at The Roxy.

We have changed our 3D system to GetD which uses passive polarised 3D glasses that you purchase from us when buying your ticket either online or in house. We have both adult and kids sized glasses and they are incredibly light and sit comfortably even if you wear normal glasses.

The ticket price includes a pair of 3D glasses that are yours to keep. They are re-usable and we encourage you to use them again on another visit or share with family and friends on their visits.

All our 3D screening tickets include the glasses. It's complicated to have a 'no glasses' option ticket price unfortunately. However, if you are re-using your 3D glasses and don't need a new pair, the usher at the cinema door will give you a $2 Roxy Gift Voucher instead.

Note that as it's a passive polarised system other 3D glasses like RealD may work, although we cannot guarantee this.

Now for a quick rundown of the new equipment that was installed for our tech minded customers. 

Projector - Barco SP4K-15C Laser - This projector can display 4K images natively and at a variety of frame rates. The Laser light source is so powerful that we are able to get to 14fl of light in 3D SCOPE (the Laser is running at 95% power). This means we can run AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER at the perfect colour grade that the maestros at Park Road Post have graded to. 

Screen - Harkness Precision White Screen - This screen, when you don't have any projected picture on it will appear to be silver, but it's actually a special coating that gives the effect of a standard white screen. This means both our 2D and 3D images really pop and you don't get hot spotting like other silver screens may get. The screen gain is 2.0 which was very close to our old screen which was 1.8 gain.

3D System - GetD - Our new 3D system is a Passive 3D Glasses system using left eye / right eye polarised glasses that you purchase from us when you buy a ticket. It has a Light Doubler that moves in front of the projector lens when switching to 3D. If you look back at the port glass you would see two images coming out. It's also a little slow to move so it does take 23 seconds to move across and when it's moving you would be able to see it moving across the screen as the doubler blacks out the image for a time.

Sound - Dolby Processor and QSC amplifiers and speakers - The sound system remains the same as this still works perfectly and sounds incredible. We have both 5.1 & 7.1 surround sound in Cinema 1 and AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER will be running in 7.1 surround.
